Detroit Interior Fashion: Windows Make a Home07/09/2018Steve Hill When you think about a new look for your Detroit home, what’s on your list? New floors? Different furniture? Even new appliances or new drawers and cabinets? What if you could make a bigger impact on a smaller budget by honing in on a different part of your home? Your priority should be your windows and window treatments. We’ll tell you why. Natural Light Plays a Big Part We can’t say enough about how important natural light is to how your space looks and feels. look washed out and faded, no matter what colors you’re using. Too little light, and it might look drab and dim, regardless of how much work you put in. To make things worse, the amount of light and the angle of the sun will change as the day goes on, so there won’t be one constant level of light throughout the day. To combat this, look for window treatments that can be adjusted easily and quickly. Our recommendations are roller shades or plantation shutters. Windows Will Determine The Rest Of Your Home You can reposition furniture. You can move lighting (somewhat). You can even remove parts of walls when you remodel. But windows are almost always there to stay, unless you’ve got a lot of time and money to spend. The best thing to do is first decide what part you want your windows to play, and then make a plan around that. Do you want your big windows to be the focal center of the room? Open up the space around the window and choose a window treatment with stunning, eye-catching colors to draw eyes in. Or would you prefer the windows to be an accent that highlights other things in the room? In that case, put in something like bright white Polywood shutters to lead your guests’ eyes through the space. Whatever you want to do, start with the windows, and work from there. Windows Are Your Home’s Eyes Yes, it’s cliche to refer to windows as “the eyes of the home,” but that doesn’t make it not true. Throughout the day, the eyes of people walking or driving by are drawn to the windows. Take advantage of that by installing window treatments that accentuate your windows and your home. Some great ideas for that are: Plantation shutters - The solid louvers and crisp lines of shutters actually tend to make your window look larger than most other window treatments do. Accent drapes - Drapes that accent the top corners of your window can frame your window and make a gorgeous silhouette when the sun goes down and your interior is lit up. Luxury roller shades - Patterned or bold colored roller shades drawn halfway down your window can add some flair to your more neutral home exterior.
