Should My Detroit Home Use an Inside Shutter Mount or Outside Shutter Mount?

February 27, 2020

During your shutter consultation, you’ll have to decide how your plantation shutters are hung. You could choose an inside mount, which sits just inside the window recess. Or you can utilize an outside mount, where your shutter frame is affixed outside the window ingress and is hidden by decorative trim.

Many times the decision of an inside mount or outside mount is determined by your window type. But sometimes the choice is yours to match your design scheme. So, when should you utilize an inside or an outside mount?

When You Should Use an Inside Mount in Your Detroit Home

Inside Shutter Mount Style

As the name suggests, an inside shutter mount is affixed on the inside of the window panel. Inside mounted shutters can use either a Z-Frame or an L-Frame. The Z-Frame is attached inside the frame but has a bit of a lip around the window which gives it a neat, polished look. However, an L-frame lies flush to the wall, and doesn’t have any extra finishing trim.

If your window can take an inside mount, the choice for this frame style is mostly cosmetic. However, windows that aren’t evenly squared may want to stay with with a Z-frame. The overhang on a Z-frame will cover the imperfections of the windows. The Z-frame is also great for windows that can tilt. L-frames function best if your window has decorative trim or you want to maintain a minimalist look for your window.

When You Should Use An Outside Mount in Your Detroit Home

Outside Shutter Mount Style

An outside mount connects onto the wall and drapes over the window frame instead of within it. The mounts are in an L-frame and contains its own trim, so the shutter’s hardware will still be stylishly concealed. The shutters operate just like they should with an inside mount, and because of the trim, your visitors won’t even see the difference.

If your windows are flat and lack a thick frame, you will have to utilize an outside mount. They also are helpful when you need some decorative trim surrounding the window to help it pop a little more. Many specialty windows with uncommon window frames, like arches or ovals, will require an outside mount, as will shutter treatments for patio and french doors.
